Abstract:Various samples of polymers were comminuted by the application of pressure at sub-zero temperatures in high-vacuum, and the increase in area at the various comminution temperatures was determined as a function of the comminution energy. It was revealed that the area exposed is considerably greater than the corresponding to the grain size distribution obtained, i.e. the case is similar to that of inorganic substances. However, the high surface area obtained under high-vacuum in inorganic substances remains the same on heating to room temperature.PMMA was the only polymer for which a relationship could be established between the specific surface and the temperature. The confidence intervals for the measured values obtained on the other polymers investigated were too wide to allow any relationship to be recognized.
