| Abstract: | Examined the relationship between the therapeutic alliance and interpersonal complementarity during the early stage of psychotherapy. 36 pairs of patients (aged 18–57 yrs) and therapists from 14 outpatient settings recorded their perceptions of their therapeutic alliance, using a working alliance inventory, and rated each other's therapy behaviors on the Checklist of Interpersonal Transactions. There were positive associations between patient–therapist interpersonal complementarity and both patients' and therapists' perceptions of the alliance. The more extreme/abnormal the patient's interpersonal behavior, the more both patient and therapist perceived a less positive working alliance.
