Strengthening the Spongy Foundation of Culverts or Sluices by a Method of Vibrating and Jetting Pile

It is the problem always to be encountered to build a culvert or a sluice on the embankments of the Yellow River where is spongy foundation with insufficient load capacity of lower factor of safety against sliding. This foundation should be treated and strengthened. The two sluices of Hulou and Hanliu have been strengthened by using a method of vibrating and jetting pile with broken stone. Based on more than 5 years' data of operation and observation, it has shown that the load capacity of the foundation has been increased, excessive settlement of the foundation reduced, stability against sliding increased and the effects are remarkable by using the method. The paper also introduces in greater detail the construction process of strengthening spongy foundation by using the method and discusses some technical problems.
