Abstract: | A generalized model for the performance optimization of physical relational database access has been developed and implemented. The model consists of a set of algorithms and cost equations. It assists the database designer in specifying and selecting optimal access schemes within given systems' constraints. The model is an extension of previous work. It is more comprehensive and flexible. It addresses problem that have not been considered in previous models; it integrates into one model aspects that were treated individually before, and it produces database access configurations that can work within certain given system constraints. |
