Abstract: | The role of the polarization of objects, for determining the forces acting on them in a surrounding potential flow, is developed. This is used to derive the particle pressure and compressibility for arrays, as well as expressions for the overall average stresses. The structure of the array, and the way in which it responds to a virtual strain, determines these stresses in contrast to earlier structure-independent models of Geurst (Physica 129A (1985) 233–261, Physica, 135A (1986) 455–486) and Wallis (Multiphase Sci. Technol. 5 (1989) 239–361, Int. J. Multiphase Flow 17 (6) (1991) 815–821). Specific results are given for rectangular arrays of spheres. |
