Abstract:In order to understand the relation of volatile organic compound(VOC)to odor type and grade, two polypropylene composites(each includes plate samples & original pellets)with burnt plastic-like odor were applied to conduct odor evaluation, gas chromatography-olfactometry-mass spectrometry(GC-O-MS)and aldehyde-ketone analysis.The results show that the constituent of VOC emitted from the plate sample and the original pellets are nearly the same, but the concentration of alkanes for the plate sample is higher than that for the original pellets, while the concentration of aldehyde-ketones for the plate sample is lower than that for the original pellets.The burnt plastic-like odor of all samples are originated from alkanes with a certain number of carbon atoms, however the odor grade is affected by alkanes and aldehyde-ketones combined.For polypropylene composites with other odors, it is reasonable to speculate that the VOC which determines the odor type cannot solely determine the odor grade.
