网桥与路由的功用是一样的,都能把数据传送到指定的目的地。可是对网络来说,选择网桥还是选择路由器的意义十分重大。由于网络用户越来越多,网桥和路由器传送数据的方式对网络的可靠性和效率有着直接的关系。为了便于说明,我们来分析一个简单的桥接网络。正如桥能把被河水隔断的一座城市连接在一起一样,网桥可以把网络的二段互连起来。来自网络一段的信息包被网桥传送到网络的另一段。

How bridges and routers accomplish their delivery task determines the reliability and efficiency of networks as they grow to serve larger numbers of users. To illustrate, look at a simple bridged network. Just as a bridge connects two sides of a city divided by a river, a network bridge connects two segments of a network. Packets of information from one segment of the network are forwarded by the bridge to the other segment.
