Technical Advancements of Phase Change Ink Jet Printing

Recently, phase change or "hot melt" ink jet technology has been an emerging offshoot of the ink jet industry in recent years. The overriding advantage of this printing method is its high quality imag es, which is independent upon the substrate. The technology has been cotnmercialized for ink jet mark ing system, office printing applications (particularly color printing ) and large format printing. This paper givesa review about the ink, the print heads, the commercial application of this technology, and how this growing segment of the printing industry might affect paper manufacturer. A model for hot melt ink interaction with paper is also discussed.
