Abstract: | The Michael type addition reaction of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with a series of vinyl sulfones, namely methyl vinyl sulfone, ethyl vinyl sulfone, and t-butyl vinyl sulfone, was performed with NaOH as catalyst to produce 2-(alkylsulfonyl)ethyl PVA derivatives. The high permselectivity of sulfur dioxide against nitrogen and oxygen was achieved through these sulfone-modified PVA membranes. |
