Abstract:In this study, the changes in microstructure of MAR-M302 cobalt based superalloy, when subjected to different heat treatments have been investigated. Heat treatments considered here involve solution treatment followed by controlled precipitation at lower temperatures. As-cast MAR-M302 superalloy includes the MC carbides as a discrete blocky dispersion with Chinese script morphology and the eutectic M23C6 and M6C carbides. Our results show that the eutectic M6C carbides remain on the microstructure at 1200 °C. Moreover, when reaching 1275 °C the eutectic M23C6 carbides disappear and a large amount of eutectic M6C carbides is dissolved. Also, fine Cr-rich M23C6 secondary carbides precipitates through the matrix at aging temperature 900 °C. The optimum microstructure and hardness are achieved during solution at 1275 °C for 4 h and aging at 900 °C for 16 h.
