Abstract:To improve the corrosion protection of sol–gel derived hybrid silica/epoxy coatings containing boehmite nanoparticles, inorganic corrosion inhibitor was introduced into the coating via encapsulation in the nanoparticles. The morphology and chemical structure of the deposited films were studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier Transformed Infra-red Spectroscopy (FT-IR). The anticorrosion and self-healing properties of the coatings were evaluated by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). The high corrosion resistance performance of such coatings is due to the presence of encapsulated cerium nitrate corrosion inhibitor that can be released at the defects within the coating, hindering the corrosion reactions at defective sites.
