Abstract:Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene(ABS) was used to toughen poly(butylene terephthalate)(PBT) and polycarbonate(PC) blends.Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis(DMTA) test shows PBT and PC are thermodynamics immiscible.The addition of ABS makes the Tg of PBT and PC shift together and improve the miscibility of PBT and PC.Differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) test indicates that the crystallization and melt temperature of PBT phase in the PBT/PC blends shift to lower temperature since the ABS introduction which inhibits the crystallization process of PBT.Scanning electron microscope(SEM) shows that ABS disperses in PBT/PC matrix uniformly and the addition of ABS makes the phase domain size of PC decrease.The toughness of PBT/PC blends is improved significantly by ABS.When the mass fraction of ABS is 10%,notched impact strength of 1300 J/m is achieved,showing the super-toughness.
