Abstract: | This qualitative essay deals with a clarification of different ways in which the term “model” is used in engineering and science. The related concepts of assumption, approximation, and simplification are discussed. The power and limitations of dimensional analysis are appraised in the context of scaling for coordinate transformation in theoretical models and for experiment design in physical models. |
