Secondary coal recovery from slurry ponds utilizing solar drying

Abstract:The drying of moist, fine coal waste was experimentally studied using an indoor batch dryer with a constant-radiation heat source. The effect of air velocity and radiation level on the coal drying rate was investigated and an analytical correlation obtained. Outdoor direct solar drying of coal waste was studied in a 3.1 m2 dryer. The solar dryer was able to dry coal at a rate of about 14 kg of coal per day per square metre of solar collector area. The simple pay-back period for such a system is between 2.5 to 5 years.
