Abstract:Rheological properties of mineral slurry are important factors influencing flotation, and flotation reagents significantly affect the rheological properties of slurry. This study investigates the effect of various modifiers on the rheological properties of mineral slurries, including smithsonite, kaolin, quartz, and calcite, in the octadecylamine collector system. The modifiers considered in this study include the pH of slurry, concentration of sodium hexametaphosphate, pH of slurry in the presence of sodium hexametaphosphate, stirring intensity in the presence of octadecylamine and sodium hexametaphosphate, and sodium sulfide, rheological properties include apparent viscosity and yield stress. The results show that with increasing pH of slurry, the apparent viscosity and yield stress of slurries of smithsonite and calcite increase, while of quartz slurry remain relatively constant. In contrast, the properties of kaolin slurry decrease. With increasing concentration of sodium hexametaphosphate, the apparent viscosities of slurries of four minerals decrease, but the extent of reduction varies. It decreases more in slurry of kaolin. Additionally, as the concentration of sodium hexametaphosphate increases, the yield stress of slurries of smithsonite, kaolin, and calcite decreases significantly, while it changes relatively gradually in quartz. In the presence of sodium hexametaphosphate, as the pH increases, the apparent viscosity and yield stress of slurrires of smithsonite and calcite decrease gradually, while the properties of kaolin slurry experience a slight reduction. In contrast, it remains relatively constant in quartz slurry. In the simultaneous presence of sodium hexametaphosphate and octadecylamine, as the stirring intensity increases, the apparent viscosity and yield stress of slurries of smithsonite, calcite, and kaolin decrease accordingly. Meanwhile, the properties of quartz remain at very low levels. With increasing concentration of sodium sulfide, the apparent viscosities of slurries of four minerals shows a trend of initially decreasing and then increasing, but the extent of change varies. Kaolin slurry experiences a more significant variation in apparent viscosity. Additionally, smithsonite, kaolin, and calcite slurries exhibit a decreasing trend in yield stress, while quartz slurry shows a gradual increase in yield stress.
