Internet-based Rapid Production DNPS Networks and Its Realization

This paper investigates how companies can make us e of the Web/Internet to form strategic alliances for rapid product realization. It is built on the research of Dispersed Network Production Systems (DNPS) that has identified the need of sharing manufacturing resources among companies in C hina (Pearl River Delta) and Hong Kong. A structured study of collaborative desi gn sourcing practices at Hong Kong/China-based manufacturing companies is descr ibed. An operational model of DNPS and the structure of virtual enterprise node in DNPS are presented. Furthermore, the whole process of forming collaboration a mong firms and main functions required in DNPS are described. This research has confirmed that there is a trend in the companies studied to acquire design techn ology from sources external to their organization. However, no formal channel is used to form these demands. When a rationale for such system was sought, compan ies would like to support such alliances.
