Abstract: | This article discusses methods used in siting reactor buildings, and their structural layouts. The advantages and the disadvantages of the above-ground and below-ground approaches in the construction of reactor buildings are considered. Current techniques for building concrete shielding around stationary power reactors are described. Detailed treatment is given to problems in the use of explosion-proof and missile-proof protective shells, and problems concerning the economics of the use of various compositions of concrete for biological shielding of reactors are elucidated. |
