Infrared dim and small target background suppression using shearlet transform

Dim and small target detection technique contained complex sky clouds, sea and ground is difficult problem for infrared search and tracking system, in this paper, the dim and small target background suppression method based on shearlet transform and general theory of statistics is proposed to solve the problem. Firstly, the shearlet transform is adapted to decompose the input infrared image, which extracts multi-scale and directional detail features of the image. Then, according to difference between target and background clutter signal, and Gaussian scale mixture (GSM) model is introduced to suppress background details and enhance target information for suppression background. Finally, target image was obtained by using adaptive thresholding method. When compared with two dimensional least mean square (TDLMS) method, several groups of experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can suppress complicated background in dim small target image effectively.
