Reasons for Colour Changes in Wool Textiles

Exposure to environmental influences such as light, heat, moisture and atmospheric pollutants, microbial attack, (residual) chemicals such as lubricants, softeners, fluorescent whiteners and salts (from washing operations) which remain in the fibre, or a contamination with chemicals can be the reasons behind colour changes occurring in wool textiles during production, storage, transport or usage. This article presents analytical methods which enable the reasons behind this colour change to be explained, thus enabling the causes of damage to be assessed. Furthermore, apart from the reasons for the colour change in wool, procedures which can predict the tendency of wool textiles to colour changes, and at the same time prevent them, are shown.
