Neoliberalizing the Public Housing Landscape Singapore's Reaction to the Global Hegemony of Neoliberalism

Among existing projects of neoliberalization, Singapore is noteworthy for its authoritarian government that not only proactively forges a localized neoliberal environment in response to the changing global capital demands but is also smartly appropriating this process to buttress the state＇s political legitimacy. Public housing is chosen as one of the main platform for the construction of consent for neoliberalism in this scenario. Tailored for those who are ＂better-educated, better-informed, well-travelled, and with higher earning power＂, these projects are paving the way for a heterogeneouspublic housing landscape, powered by, and in return supporting, the discourse of an open, cosmopolitan Singapore. This new strategy, which mediates the government and the governed, reveals the state＇s efforts in providing a neoliberal space for the emerging affluent classes as well as in sustaining its political legitimacy.
