Abstract: | It is demonstrated that undesired self-focusing of strong laser beams through a liquid crystal film can be suppressed by the application of an alternating voltage on the sample. Diffraction efficiencies greater than 10% for optically induced optical phase gratings in the liquid crystal are obtained when self-focusing has been suppressed. |
