Lactoferrin,a fascinating biological protein

Lactoferrin,an iron-binding glycoprotein with various significant biological functions,is the subject of a considerable number of scientific studies.Various biological functions of this protein have been reported during the past two decades.The antimicrobial activity of lactoferrin was reported initially and other properties of lactoferrin including regulation of iron transport,of the immune response and cellular functions were later elucidated.Many of its activities can be grouped under the heading of host defence.Respecting the quality of the molecule,lactoferrin offers real potential as a therapeutic agent,provide anti infection and anti-virus,tumorigenesis and metastasis.In this article,the current state of knowledge across the whole range of biological activities expressed by this fascinating protein were reviewed,including mechanism of anti-bacterial,anti-oxidant,immune regulator and anti-tumour activities.
