Abstract: | It is thermodynamically possible to decompose carbon dioxide to carbon and oxygen by means of thermochemical cycles analogous to cyclic processes for decomposing water. Highly concentrated solar energy can supply the necessary energy at temperatures that permit short, efficient cycles. The reduced carbon can be converted to fuels that are dense, convenient, and require no major changes in the consuming sector of the economy. |
