Abstract:Six neutron sources are available for research in North America. The facilities are funded by their respective governments as user-facilities. User proposals are accepted on a regular basis and if they are success ful in competition with all the other proposals, time is allocated for the experiments. This paper describes the neutron sources and their capabilities. Thomas M. Holden retired from the National Research Council of Canada at Chalk River in 1998. He is currently head of the instrument development team for the VULCAN engineering diffractometer at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). Aaron D. Krawitz is professor emeritus in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri, and Ian Anderson is Director of Experimental Facilities Division at the SNS at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
