Abstract:On the basis of systematic analyses of the relations among the width-depth ratios, the locations of maximum velocity in the crosssection and the boundary shear stress distributions, a simple model for the velocity distribution in smooth rectangular open channels is presented in this paper, which makes it possible to reasonably predict the velocity value at every point of a rectangular cross section. As a good approximation, the model is then suggested to be used for turbulent flows in open channels with. any given symmetrical shape.
