Jane Austen is a distinguished novelist at the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.She skillfully employs the violation of the Cooperative Principle in the communication of characters as well as of author and reader to generate the sense of humor,create unforgettable characters and express the theme in an ironic tone.This essay aims to analyze the unique artistic features of Pride and Prejudice in perspective of the Cooperative Principle and proves the applicability of Grice's theory of implicature to literary criticism.
