Development and application of automotive belts

In 1917, an American called Charlie Gates invented the first rubber flat belt （V belt） reinforced by canvas in the world, which was a break through in the area of drive system techniques using （flat belt） and ropes universally used in automobile engines, and gradually, turned into poly-V belt. The replacement of chain with belt in the timing system in automobile engines made a great improvement in preserving and reducing the noise of the whole timing system. Herein, taking the Gates＇ product as example, this article introduces the development and application of V belt, poly-V belt and timing belt in automobile engines.
