Abstract: | The equilibrium represented by the reaction MnO(in slag)+C=Mn+COhas been investigated with a view to evaluating the activity of MnO in liquid blast-furnace-type slags. In two series of experiments,carbon-saturated iron and silver wereused respectively as the solvent metal. It has been shown that the use of silver insteadof the conventional iron as the metal phase has certain important advantages.Besides, some preliminary work has been done on the rate of reduction of MnO from liquid blast-furnace-type slags. The effect of various slag components on the activity of MnO has been explainedfrom the point of view of the ionic structure of slags. The mechanism of reduction ofMnO and the order of reaction are discussed on the basis of convectional diffusion.Thepractical application of the experimental data in blast-furnace operation is briefly dis-cussed. |
