Challenges and Suggestions of Low Carbon Transformation for Petrochemical Industry to Green Hydrogen Business

As industrial raw materials and alternative fuels, green hydrogen produced from renewable energy can play a great role in carbon mitigation for industries with great difficulty in decarbonization, such as oil refining and chemical industry, metallurgy, building materials manufacturing, traffic and transportation. Some well-known international oil companies have set an example in the development of new energy and hydrogen energy business, and many projects have shown good demonstration effects. However, green hydrogen production faces the problems of large land occupation and high cost due to low energy density of solar and wind energies, and poor economy of hydrogen production from electrolytic water. In order to develope green hydrogen business, the petrochemical industry can not only consolidate the dominant position of transportation energy supply, but also help to reduce itself carbon emissions. It is necessary to strengthen technological innovation and development, improve the level of process economy, reduce investment costs and production costs. Moreover, in order to obtain more development opportunities, the petrochemical industry should make full use of social resources, innovate operation models, reduce development risks.
