Abstract:Benzaldehyde is an important fine chemical product andorganic synthesis intermediate. It has been widely used in the production ofmedicine, pesticide, cosmetics, food and other industries. Catalyticalhydrogenation of benzoic acid and methyl benzoate to benzaldehyde follows therequirements of atomic economy and green chemistry. This process has someadvantages, e.g., simple, no chlorine in the product, and high selectivity.Based on recent literatures, this paper summarizes the research progress onreaction mechanism, catalyst composition, reaction conditions and product yieldof this process. Based on the reaction characteristics of high temperature andlow pressure, catalyst design strategy is proposed, i.e., weak acid and strongalkaline sites, appropriate oxygen vacancy concentration and good heat resistant stability.Direction of future studies in this area is also suggested.
