Abstract:It is difficult to separate m- and p- cresols byconventional methods due to their very close boiling points. This has been thebottleneck for the technology development of crude phenols refining from coaltar. Different m/p-cresols separationtechnologies developed in recent years were thoroughly reviewed, includingalkylation, complexation, crystallization, simulated moving bed adsorptionseparation and membrane separation technologies. After analysis and evaluationof the above processes and technologies, it is concluded that alkylation is themost mature technology at present, but the processing energy consumption ishigh. For the simulated moving bed adsorption separation technology, it ispromising for large-scale separation of m/p-cresolsin the future, however, selectivity and adsorption capacity of adsorbents stillneed to be improved. Therefore, research on the separation technology of m/p-cresols in the next stage shouldfocus on development and optimization of separation materials and separationprocesses. In addition, m/p-cresolsseparation technology should be integrated with separation technology ofphenolic compounds from coal tar to develop a comprehensive high value-addedcoal chemical industry chain from coal tar to produce refined phenolic products.
