Abstract:Anaerobic digestion was a promising technology for the organic waste and wastewater treatment. However, the deficiency of necessary trace elements greatly limit the metabolic activities of anaerobic microbes, thus the performance of anaerobic digestion was negatively affected. How to manage the trace elements supplementation is an important research issue. The effects of Fe, Co and Ni on the improvement of an anaerobic digestion process have been widely reported and reviewed. While the role of Se, W, Mo, Cu and Zn in anaerobic digestion was lack of summary and analysis. There are common metabolic key enzymes and 6 unique coenzymes in methanogens, which can be stimulated by metal ions. In this paper, the mechanism of enzyme on the metabolic performance was reviewed and analyzed. The metals contained enzymes in 11 methanogens were also summarized. In addition, the results of adding trace elements in both mesophilic and thermophilic anaerobic system were compared. This work may be served as a reference for the improvement of an anaerobic system by regulating the trace elements nutrients.
