Research and Practice of CPTED in Architectural Design and Community Planning

This paper reviewed the academic research and practice on improving urban environment or communities by crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED)after Newman raised the conception of defensible space thirty years ago. The multi-faceted approaches of crime prevention through environmental design reflected in those writings are now called "second generation CPTED". Based on traditional CPTED tools,the paper suggested a more comprehensive approach including social,physical and management aspect so as to integrate the concept of creating activity space,offering social programs and neighborhood management,and encouraging residents participation to the management for environment.
