Abstract:A two-dimensional theory of grain growth has been derived based on the concept of curvature-driven migration of the grain boundaries. Grains with six neighbouring grains are of the critical grain size and will neither shrink nor grow. The rate equation is thus in accordance with the von Neumann–Mullins law. An analytical expression for the steady state distribution has been derived based on the same principles as Hillert's theory. The present theory contains both a minimum and a maximum grain size.
