Recently shared-memory multiprocessors have emerged as an especially cosetffective way to improve computing power and speed. Most multiprocessor architects have employed private cache tcchnigues to solve memory contention and communication contention, wbich would introduce the cache consistency or cache coher-ence problem. This artical surveys schemes for cache coherence ranging from protocols that maintain coherence in hardware to software policies.
