Abstract: | This paper argues that “hardware compilers” (broadly construed as systems that automate any part of the VLSI design process) should be classified not simply by their input and output languages, but by how they treat the various kinds of decisions made in the design process. It examines several aspects of decision making and attempts to classify some hardware compiler efforts with respect to this framework. |
