Abstract:The oxidation of formic acid was examined by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry in order to determine the rate of catalytic activity (reaction turnover) as a function of surface crystallography on preferentially oriented (electrochemically modified) platinum electrodes. The resulting turnover rates indicated a maximum fourfold current enhancement for an approximately 60% (111)-oriented surface versus a polycrystalline surface, suggesting that preferentially oriented electrodes are of potential practical significance.
