SEQUENCE AND CYCLE

Abstract:An important task of sequence stratigraphy is to study sequences. Vail et al. (1977, 1987) definitely pointed out 3rd-order sequences which can make correlation of sea level fluctuation on all earth. Recently, as sequence stratigraphy has accumulated large materials, the researchers have become interested in dividing sequences that to provide many plans which have different orders and names and time intervals. The united division of sequences is the premise for correlativity of all earth. According to research materials of predecessors and one's own study of sequences and cycles, the division is worked out as: 1st-order sequences (megasequence) with time intervals of 60~120Ma; 2nd-order sequences (mesosequence) with time intervals of 30~40Ma; 3rd-order sequences (orthosequence & sequence) with time intervals of 2~5Ma; 4th-order sequences (parasequence set) with time intervals of 0.4~0.5Ma; 5th-order sequences (parasequence) with time intervals of 0.1Ma and 6th-order sequences (rhythm bed) with time intervals of 0.02~0.04Ma.
