Development of Surfactants Utilizing Biomass Resources

Using biomass as a substitute for fossil fuel to develop fine chemicals is a developing trend in chemical industry.The primary biomass used for surfactant production usually is as follows: cellulose,lignin,starch,chitin,oil and fat and pine oleoresin(an exudate of pine trees) and so on.Unique surfactants with similar structures to fatty acid surfactants can be made from rosin and its derivatives,such as abietyl alcohol and rosin amine.Developed rosin-based nonionic surfactants,anionic surfactants,cationic surfactants and amphoteric surfactants were reviewed emphatically in this paper.
