Land and Rapid Development in China

This article discusses the relationship between land and China’s rapid development from perspectives of theories,situational foundations and empirical outcomes.Land affects china’ s rapid development as local governments support industrialization by providing land-related preferential policies and help accelerate service sector growth by industrialization and spatial urbanization.The internal and external environments such as china’ s reform and opening-up policies,political stability,the third wave of economic globalization,reforms of the social and economic systems in land-use.public finance and housing,government-dominated development modal and so on all help to reinforce the impact of land use on development. The paper concludes that low-cost land drives rapid development while the actual land system widens the urban-rural gap.Existing land use institutions cannot be sustained as China is switching to a quality-based development paradigm.
