Abstract:The results of finite element analyses of two test embankments, one geotextile reinforced the other a blank control section, are compared with field observations and the results of a simple limit equilibrium analysis. The results of both types of analyses indicate good agreement between predicted and observed failure heights. The geotextile reinforcement was found to significantly increase embankment stability for this case. The finite element analysis provided useful information concerning the development of plastic failure within the soil and the deformations which occurred as tension developed in the reinforcement. It is suggested that this information, which is not provided by simple limit equilibrium analysis, may be essential to the safe design of reinforced embankments.
