Introduction to the microscopy of erosion

Erosion of materials by the impact of small solid particles, by the impact of liquid drops and by cavitation in a liquid is discussed. Erosion arising from these three sources is described, terminology is defined, and the methods available for erosion testing in the laboratory are reviewed. A brief discussion is presented of the microscopical techniques which have been used to study erosion, and some of their advantages and drawbacks are outlined.
