Computer simulation of galloping catenaries

Abstract:In order to provide more detailed information on galloping, a computer simulation of a galloping catenary has been developed. The coupled non-linear partial differential equations describing the motion are solved using a combination of finite difference and numerical integration techniques. A major feature of this simulation is that the elasticity of the cable is included. Aerodynamic data are input to the program as functions of velocity and angle of attack and the relative wind speed and angle are calculated as functions of position along the span. Field test results from two dissimilar test lines were used to check the simulation.
