Equalization for PSK signals over non-linear channels with non-symmetrical frequency response

Abstract:In this paper, a minimum mean square error equalizer (MMSE) for receiving quadrature phase shift keyed (QPSK) signals over band-limited non-linear satellite channels is designed. The effect of intersymbol interference due to non-symmetrical frequency response followed by AM/AM and AM/PM conversions are taken into account while optimizing the performance in the presence of down-link additive white Gaussian noise. The taps gain coefficients of the equalizer are obtained using numerical methods. The average probability of error is computed for two systems: the one sample detector and the (MMSE) equalizer. It is shown that significant improvement in performance is possible by replacing the one sample detector by an MMSE equalizer.
