Phase Noise Limiting Factors of Direct Frequency Synthesizer

The frequency synthesizer is regarded as the ＂heart＂ of the radar electronic system. Its phase noise has a great impact on the performance of radar system. With the development of radar technology, the frequency synthesizer is required to have low phase noise. This paper briefly introduces the basic concept of phase noise of the frequency synthesizer. Based on the basic method of realizing the frequency synthesizer, the phase noise limiting factors of direct frequency synthesizer are described. The practical demonstration of the influence of those restriction on phase noise is made. The future development of frequency synthesizer is discussed.
