Abstract:The development of a city is closely related with the health of its rivers. The health of the rivers ofa city means that the natural state of the rivers is healthy and able to provide the city with a good ecologicalenvironment, serve the public, meet the need of human society for sustainable development, and finally form avirtuous circle in which a balance is kept between human development of rivers and its protection of therivers. As the most important natural carrier of a city, whether its rivers are healthy or not will affect itsdevelopment in such respects as urban layout, environment, culture, politics, economy, security, etc. But in thecurrent urbanization, the health of the rivers are being threatened by water pollution, water shortage, riversilting, etc caused by population growth and industrial expansion. The fundamental way to achieve the commondevelopment of a city and its rivers lies in the construction of an ecologically-civilized society in which citydwellers will coexist with the rivers in harmony. For this purpose, the sustainable development of a city shouldbe supported by the health of its rivers, attach much importance to the saving, protection and allocation ofwater resources and try to maintain a virtuous water environment and ecological system in developing andutilizing the water resources of city rivers and constructing engineering projects.Developing the core value ofhuman beings'' harmonious coexistence with their rivers is to be the foundation on which both a city and itsrivers could develop in a healthy, prosperous, natural and stable way.
Keywords:health of a river   development of a city   function of a river   relationship between people and theirrivers
