LANDSCAPE CHARACTER ASSESSMENT IN BRITAIN

The concept of landscape character and the process of landscape character assessment have become central to a wide range of activity in landscape and environmental planning and management in the UK. This paper provides an overview of the approach to the assessment and mapping of landscape character in England (and, briefly, in Scotland) and examines its applications. It explores the evolution of current thinking about landscape character from its origins in earlier work on landscape evaluation and landscape assessment, and examines the way that methods for assessing character have developed and been applied in a wide range of practical situations.
