Abstract:In this paper, the optimization of CNC machining parameters was conducted using the Taguchi design method on the surface quality of massive wooden edge glued panels made of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.). Five machining parameters and their effects on surface roughness were evaluated. These parameters included cutters type, tool clearance strategy, spindle speed, feed rate and depth of cut. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed to identify significant factors affecting the surface roughness (R a and R z ). Optimum machining parameter combinations were acquired by conducting an analysis of the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio. Optimal cutting performance for R a and R z was obtained for Cutter 1, at a tool clearance strategy of a raster 16,000 rpm spindle speed, 1000 mm/min feed rate and 4 mm depth. Based on the results of the confirmation tests, R a decreased 2.8 times and R z decreased 2.0 times.
