Dissecting & Scanning Contrasting Two Modes of Revealing the Inside

This essay contrasts two modes of revealing the inside of buildings.＂Section＂is a＂dissection＂of a building,which has characterised many trends of architectural thinking in the Western tradition.While the other mode＂scanning＂,which is prevalent in the Chinese tradition of depicting buildings,reveals a more continuous,relational and dynamic understanding across the whole life of a building.These two modes represent ways of thinking on nominal outlines and substantial surfaces respectively.The deals of dissection did not carry through to the language of new design in China since the beginning of the 20th century.
