Abstract: | Abstract Rambles in Northern India, by Francesca H. Wilson, was published by Sampson Low, Marston, Low and Searle of Fleet Street, in 1876, having been printed by the Chiswick Press. Copies are in the author's collection, in the Boston Public Library and in the British Library. This one-of-a-kind item is interesting enough to warrant a description here. It is an elaborate production, in a fullcloth binding, with golden embossments on cover and spine. All edges are gilt, and a small amount of text is spread over its 86 quarto pages, with wide margins, and ornately designed strips as chapter-heads and endings. Twelve photographs are pasted on to thick sheets, within pale green borders, their captions enlivened by quotations from the text. The pictures are protected by blank sheets, instead of tissue guards. Apart from the photographs, it has no redeeming features. |
